A remote South American mining operation identified extensive failure in HDPE external coatings across multiple pipe segments of 14″ OD API 5L Grade B. Surface contamination and mechanical stress compromised the original protective coating, exposing the pipe to external corrosion risks. A total of 160 feet required remediation across nine separate locations, each at varying elevations. The StopCorr™ repair system, including the viscoelastic wrap and protective PE outerwrap, was selected as a cold-applied, surface-tolerant solution to provide corrosion resistance under extreme conditions.
High Altitude Mining Challenges
- Confined spaces and elevation changes require scaffolded access and strict safety compliance.
- Remote, high-altitude location restricts hot work and equipment mobilization.
- Thin atmosphere and low oxygen levels at high altitudes can slow coating cure times and impact worker efficiency.
- Frequent temperature fluctuations and intense UV exposure accelerate coating degradation and complicate surface preparation.
Project Needs
- HDPE lining failure exposes steel to corrosive agents in a high-risk tunnel environment.
- Avoid hot work and specialized equipment during repairs in a high-altitude, confined space.
- Residual HDPE and contamination necessitated SSPC-SP3 mechanical surface prep.
- Enable targeted, fast application with reliable adhesion and protection against corrosion threats.
- Ensure safety compliance in a remote area with strict operational standards.
StopCorr™ System Provides Corrosion Protection in High-Altitude Mining...
Provided Protection
Despite challenges associated with high altitude, limited access, and variable elevations, the StopCorr™ system delivered:
The dual-layer system — StopCorr™ for corrosion mitigation and StopCorr™ PE for physical protection — enabled the asset owner to meet strict operational parameters without disrupting productivity. The adaptability of the repair system also allowed the protection of additional damaged pipe segments identified at the time of installation, extending the overall success of the project.
